This multi-disciplinary artwork entitled "Trace", created by architect and artist Zhu Xiaodi, consists of thousands of delicate threads. Through this installation, we have explored the complexities of light and shadow, expanding our knowledge and appreciation of the work of a lighting designer.
The artist requires that the threads' shadows need to cover 33' x 33' x 33' space without distortions, especially at turning points. The artist uses these threads to mimic brush strokes of Chinese ink painting. As lighting designers, we paid close attention to avoiding the direct view of glaring light fixtures in order to make audiences experience light without noticing lighting fixtures. We chose to use spotlights as the only light source. With limited mounting space, we created a global light source by putting 24 lights together in the center of the space.
Therefore, when the lights turn to full intensity, the space looks not only smooth and clean, but also creates clean and sharp shadows with delivered lumens of 15fc. The physical threads and the shadow's threads are blending together inside of the entire space. When the light intensity turns to 80%, it creates harmony between the piece and its audience. When you walk into the space, you can experience various lights and shadows physicially and spiritually throughout this piece.
